Staying with the message of the new heart

Quite frankly, it's difficult to believe I have a good heart sometimes. The evidence against it seems too strong.

Lately, there's been almost an unseen pull downwards, a drain-circling suck towards hopeless futility.  That dark undertow almost got me to draw some fatal conclusions about my own heart.  That pull is towards shame:

I've blown it with my kids a lot lately;  not given myself to my wife as she needs.  I'm actually craving the goodness of Jesus and his choices, begging him to give me his own maturity.  (If you think holiness is hard, try out your favorite addiction or uncontrolled craving for a while.  That's harder to live with.)

In these moments, we have two choices:  fatalism or freedom:

  • Fatalism says:  I am the sum of my failures.  My heart cannot be good -- just look at the evidence against it.
  • Freedom says:  My heart is my hope.  I am a new creation (my heart is now supernaturally restored by Christ.)  Despite the external evidence, there is a new internal reality.  My failures are no longer the truest me.  (Even the apostle Paul says this - Romans 7:20)

  • You can't go by your failures.
  • You can't go by what others think of you.

  • You may not even be able to go by what you've been told by church leaders in the past.

Stay with the truth:  your heart is good now.  Jesus made it so.

Review: "Recover Your Good Heart"

Mariah Secrest, Arts & Culture Editor for Wrecked for the Ordinary ezine, just posted a very thoughtful review of my book, Recover Your Good Heart.

Wrecked for the Ordinary has a great mission.  This is from their website: Wrecked for the Ordinary is "an online magazine for spiritual misfits. Each week, we publish six new stories from Jesus-followers who are re-imagining culture. We’re members of a generation that is not content to view the world through the drab lens of materialism and hand-me-down religion... We want more. We want to live life on purpose, actively participating in true community, intimacy, and adventure. We are re-imagining culture."

Desire and calling

Show me a person who has lost his or her sense of desire, and I'll show you someone who doesn't know what their calling is.

You find your calling through your deepest desires.

There are those who would advise us not to do this, because it could lead to sin or some form of ruin. Their assumption is that all desire, or the vast majority of it, is fleshly and self-centered and must be avoided. Yet, this is not a New Covenant view of desire ... because it's not a New Covenant view of the believer's heart.

With our new heart, given by God when we said 'yes' to Jesus, comes a reservoir of good and noble desires. Find those desires and you'll find your calling.

As you trace desire throughout your life, from childhood to today, what are the recurring themes?

  • What have you loved doing and do well?
  • What do you find yourself compelled to bring in any given situation?

Our giftedness tends to go beyond mere competency or training, as we find that there is something spiritual occuring that is both us, and beyond us in its working. It is the outflow of the Holy Spirit in us, working as us.

Review of "Recover Your Good Heart"-- Joel Brueseke

A review of my book, Recover Your Good Heart,  from blogger Joel Brueseke:

In the midst of a church culture that tends to put a huge emphasis on outward behavior change and religious activity, Jim Robbins’ book Recover Your Good Heart is a refreshing and much needed look into the true life that we have in Christ that is lived freely and abundantly from within -- through the new heart that God gave us when we were raised to life with Christ.

How many Christians are still living with the mentality of something that was true at one time -– that our hearts were deceitful and desperately wicked -– when the scriptures tell us that in Christ God has taken away the old, unredeemed, sinful heart and placed in us a brand new heart that is holy, righteous and good!

It’s in our new God-given heart that we find real life and our true identity.  Robbins examines the scriptures to show us what this new heart is and how we live from our good heart rather than trying harder to become something better.  I highly recommend this book for anyone who tends to live in guilt and shame, or for anyone who simply wants to grow in understanding their true identity in Christ so they can freely live the life they were always meant to live.
